Writing and Conducting Effective Performance Reviews


Writing and conducting performance appraisals is perhaps the most important duty of any supervisor. If not written effectively or conducted productively, appraisals can inhibit employee development and decrease organizational success. When the review process works successfully, individual and company alike benefit.

Who Should Take This Course:

Anyone who supervises other people and periodically evaluates their performance. (This course can be specifically designed for new supervisors.)

Course Objectives:

Participants will learn and practice techniques for improving their ability to describe performance in writing and to articulate evaluations in face-to-face meetings. Specifically, you will learn how to:

  1. Describe specific behaviors in writing.
  2. Organize the parts of the written review to facilitate readability and usefulness.
  3. Prepare to conduct a face-to-face discussion of the review.
  4. Use good communication techniques such as active listening, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
  5. Devise strategies for dealing with undesirable behaviors.

Course Design:

Writing and Conducting Effective Performance Reviews is conducted over 1 day. The total cost includes pre-program interviews with and/or surveys of participants to determine their specific needs. The cost also includes preparation, instruction, and all training materials (substantial manuals) for up to 20 participants.
