Ellen Dowling, AKA the Standup Trainer, is a nationally known speaker and consultant who conducts training programs in public speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills for a variety of clients, including Intel Corporation, Honeywell, Security First Technologies, General Mills, Alltel, New Mexico Tech University, Sandia National Laboratories, the Department of Homeland Security, Peking University, and the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) and National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of the People's Republic of China.
She is also an experienced writer and editor of major documents (environmental impact statements, national strategy reports) for such clients as the Department of the Interior and the US Fish & Wildlife service. In addition, she is a contributing writer for The Motley Fool online investment service. She is the author of The Standup Trainer and the co-author of Presenting with Style: Advanced Strategies for Superior Presentations.
Currently, Dr. Dowling is an instructor for the University of New Mexico's Training and Development in Instructional Technology (TDIT) certificate program, where she teaches "Presentation Skills for Trainers" and "Exploring Presentation Styles." Formerly she was an adjunct instructor for UNM's Organizational Learning and Instructional Technologies (OLIT) program, where she taught "Effective Presentation Skills," and for Southern Illinois University's Workforce Education and Development program, where she taught "Instructional Methods and Materials" at the Kirtland AFB branch.
She is also a visiting professor at Peking University, China, where she teaches "Executive Communication" classes for students enrolled in the Beijing International MBA (BiMBA) program. Additionally, she works in China as a contract trainer and teaches presentation skills to high-level officials of the Chinese government.
Dr. Dowling has worked as a consultant to the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Domestic Preparedness (ODP) Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training initiative. She has assisted in evaluating the courses, “Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings,” and “Managing Suicide Bombings Issues,” conducted at New Mexico Tech, which are designed to ensure that “First Responders” will be adequately prepared to respond to future incidents of domestic terrorism. She has also been a consultant to the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Roswell, where she helped with program design and learning evaluation.
A member of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) since 1983, Dr. Dowling has held many leadership positions at both local and regional levels. She has also appeared as a standup comic at Laffs Comedy Club in Albuquerque and has over 30 years' experience in live theater as an actor, playwright, and director. In her spare time she is former president and current newsletter editor for The Irish-American Society of New Mexico and the Southwestern Coordinator for the Children's Friendship Project for Northern Ireland .
